First, don't panic

A crown that comes off is common and usually fixable. It is not always an emergency, but the tooth underneath is exposed and can be sensitive or fragile, so call us soon.

What to do right away

  • Find the crown and keep it. Rinse it gently and store it in a small container. Bring it to your visit, as it can often be re-cemented.
  • Look at the tooth. If a piece of tooth is inside the crown, or the tooth looks broken, tell us when you call.
  • Protect the area. Chew on the other side and avoid sticky, hard or very hot and cold foods.
  • Ease sensitivity. An over-the-counter pain reliever, taken as directed, can help.
  • Temporary hold, if needed. Pharmacy dental cement can hold the crown in place for a short time. Do not use household glue.

Why crowns come off

The usual causes are decay under the crown, worn cement, a sticky or hard bite, or grinding. Finding the cause matters, because it decides whether the same crown can go back on.

What happens at your visit

Dr. Leila Khamsei examines the tooth and the crown and takes an X-ray if needed. If both are sound, the crown is cleaned and re-cemented. If there is decay or damage, the tooth is repaired and a new crown is made.

When it is urgent

Call right away if you have severe pain, swelling, or a sharp edge cutting your cheek or tongue. If you may have inhaled the crown or have trouble breathing, go to the nearest emergency room.
