Age is rarely the deciding factor
There is no upper age limit for dental implants. What matters is your overall health, the condition of your gums, and whether there is enough healthy jawbone to hold the implant. Many patients in their seventies and eighties are good candidates, and for some of them implants are a more comfortable choice than a denture that slips.
What we look at instead of your birthday
At your consultation, Dr. Leila Khamsei reviews a few things:
- Bone volume. A 3D CBCT scan shows whether the jaw can support an implant or whether bone grafting would help first.
- Gum health. Active gum disease needs to be treated before an implant is placed.
- Medical history. Conditions such as diabetes, and medications that affect bone or healing, do not automatically rule implants out, but they shape the plan. We may coordinate with your physician.
- Tobacco use. Smoking slows healing and raises the risk of implant failure.
Why older adults often choose implants
An implant replaces the root as well as the visible tooth, which helps the jawbone keep its shape. It does not rely on neighboring teeth for support, and it is cleaned much like a natural tooth. For patients who are tired of adhesives or a loose partial, that stability is usually the main appeal.
When another option may fit better
Implants involve minor surgery and several months of healing. If your health makes surgery risky, or if you prefer a faster or lower-cost solution, a bridge or a well-fitted denture can still restore your smile. We will walk you through each option honestly.
