The short answer

Yes. Professional fluoride treatments are considered safe for children and adults when applied by a dental team, and major health organizations, including the American Dental Association, support their use to prevent tooth decay.

What a fluoride treatment is

Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens enamel and helps repair the earliest stage of decay before it becomes a cavity. In the office it is applied as a varnish, gel or foam. The visit takes a few minutes, and the amount used is small and placed directly on the teeth.

Where the safety concerns come from

Most concerns relate to swallowing too much fluoride over time, mainly in young children whose permanent teeth are still forming. This can cause dental fluorosis, which usually appears as faint white marks on the teeth. It is a cosmetic change, and it comes from ongoing excess intake, such as swallowing toothpaste, rather than from a periodic professional treatment.

How to keep fluoride use in the safe range

  • Use a smear of toothpaste the size of a grain of rice for children under three, and a pea-sized amount from ages three to six.
  • Supervise brushing so young children spit rather than swallow.
  • Tell us about any fluoride supplements or rinses your family already uses.

Who benefits most

Children, patients with a history of cavities, people with dry mouth, and anyone with exposed roots or braces tend to benefit most. Dr. Leila Khamsei will recommend how often a treatment makes sense for you; for many patients that is once or twice a year, at a regular cleaning.
